A Fly-Fishing Guide to the South Platte River represents decades of experience from the top guide on this demanding river. It encompasses a thorough look at each section and gives details on the hatches and recommended fly patters for each season of the year.
Orvis-Endorsed guide Pat Dorsey, who has been guiding for more than ten years, spends at least 200 days a year on the stream. Guide Director and a partner in the Blue Quill Angler, Inc., in Evergreen, Colorado, he oversees more than thirty guides and produces a weekly on-line fishing report that keeps anglers up-to-date on fishing conditions.
Pat is also a master flightier who has been commercially tying flies for more than fifteen years, producing up to 28,000 flies a year. Part of a team of contract tiers for Umpqua Feather Merchants in Glide, Oregon, he is also a Pro Team Member for Whiting Farms, a leader in hackle distribution. Pat’s Fly of the Month Club has attracted anglers worldwide, supplying helpful insight to effective flies and, most importantly, how to fish them.
Pat does slide presentations and lectures at fishing clubs throughout the central Rocky Mountain region, and he is a celebrity speaker for the International Sportsman’s Exposition, which makes seven stops in major western cities such as Denver, Seattle, Portland, Phoenix, and Salt Lake City. He recently did a special for ESPN and Trout Unlimited Television on the South Platte’s infamous Cheesman Canyon, and he completed a national advertising campaign for Fetzer Vineyards (in the Napa Valley) on the Snake River in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. He has also appeared in Fly Fisherman and other national magazines, promoting the Orvis Wonderline Advantage.
Active in Trout Unlimited and the conservation of cold-water fisheries, Pat has won the annual Master Fly Tournament in Cheesman Canyon five out of eight years, and he also won the prestigious Orvis Guide of the Year, awarded based on customer satisfaction. Pat, his wife, Kim, and their five children reside in Parker, Colorado.
