CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: The author, Major Holman Melcher of the 20th Maine, played a critical role at Little Round Top during the Battle of Gettysburg. William Staple here uses Melcher's wartime letters to trace his career whose service and merit resulted in promotion through the ranks from corporal to major. This is a fine addition to the literature or one of the great Union regiments.
