Synopsis
2nd Printing, 2015 "Eva's War" is the beginning of a captivating trilogy about one woman's fight for survival and her journey through one of the most turbulent times in world history. The year is 1945, the world is at war. Young Eva must leave her beloved Danzig to escape the Soviets and the harm they would bring to her little family. After hearing rumors about the terrible devastation of the town of Nemmersdorf, Eva makes the heartbreaking decision to leave her parents. It is more than a decision to leave the comforts of home, as the lives of those who remain are also at risk. Without knowing if she will ever find her husband Manfred again, or see her loving parents, Eva sets out on her own through the wreckage of war. Driven by a youthful sense of adventure, Eva takes her baby daughter and boards a ship sailing into the unknown. They barely escape death on numerous occasions. Alone and carrying the full weight of saving her child's life on her shoulders, Eva's only solace is the beautiful music she creates on the piano. Drawing from this love of music, and the wholehearted love she feels for her husband, now lost to her, Eva emerges from the ashes of war a new, stronger woman.
From the Publisher
1945 -- a young German mother flees westward from Danzig.
This gripping story of flight, refugees, privation, defeat, moral quandaries, growth and finally healing is strangely moving and compelling. It becomes a powerful anti-war statement from a woman's perspective. One year is recounted, beginning in January, 1945. Danzig, a Free City between the Great Wars, was seized by Hitler in 1939, and threatened by Soviet troops as Eva flees with her daughter. They say that history is written by the winners, yet this bit of history comes from that nation which lost the war. Now that that nation is recovered and reunited, this sort of remembering is all the more important. And Eva Krutein is no loser. She and her family emigrated to Chile, and then to California, where they now live. She is an accomplished musician and writer. "An excellent, provocative and important book." -- Laurel Speer, poet and critic "A marvelously moving and often humorous real-life story. Sad revelations, painful memories, excruciating experiences are tempered by compassion, love and a powerful, contagious optimism. Music permeates this tale.: -- Alfred-Maurice de Zayas, Senior Legal Officer, the United Nations, Geneva, Switzerland "Her novel-like presentation makes for exciting reading. The story of German refugees has not been well covered, so this should find a place in academic and public libraries." -- THE LIBRARY JOURNAL "Eva’s account is one of fervent desire for peace in a setting of chaos, deprivation and horror. Yet EVA’S WAR is not exclusively about grief and guilt. It is about forgiveness, trust, accomplishment and love of life." -- Thora Guinn, ALBUQUERQUE PEACE CENTER NEWS "A gripping, unforgettable family odyssey through the terror of war and its aftermath. Definitely a page-turner. A different view of both the victors and the vanquished. One woman’s spellbinding adventure in keeping her family intact." -- Douglas Muir, author of TIDES OF WAR "Reads like romantic fiction, yet this has the genuine ring of historical truth." -- Henry Meyer, Department of History, U of CAL, Irvine
