General wear & edge wear, 2 small areas abraded at front cover edge, some stains; dampstaining to lower edges of prelims. Overall condition about average for this type of item; text sound & clean with a pencil mark at p.28, possibly by Theobald Smith. Signed presentation inscription in blue ink at top of first flyleaf: "Dr. Theobald Smith, with compliments of Samuel C. Prescott." Although not signed by Smith, it is a book he once owned. Prescott was co-author of Prescott & Dunn's Industrial Microbiology, still a standard text. The Effront book was an important text in the field of the organic chemistry of enzymes.
