Handsome and well illustrated volume devoted to the first of Vanderbilt's two successful defenses of the America's Cup, in the J-Class Enterprise. Most of the excellent photographs herein are by Morris Rosenfeld and Edwin Levick. The color frontispiece is from a painting by Warren Sheppard. This is copy #13 of 250 in this limited edition, which is beautifully typeset with generous margins. This copy is inscribed and signed by Vanderbilt to his fellow New York Yacht Club syndicate member, George Whitney: "George Whitney / with the compliments of / Harold S. Vanderbilt" Covers the challenge from Sir Thomas Lipton, the design of Enterprise by Starling Burgess, her construction by Herrishoff, and many details of crew selection, trials and preliminary races, other prospective defenders, tuning up, and finally the match races themselves. Appendices include the Deed of Gift of the America's Cup to the New York Yacht Club as a perpetual Challenge Cup, the rules governing the 1930 America's Cup races, and a record of the previous races for the America's Cup back to 1851. Near fine, bound in slate blue paper over boards with dark blue cloth spine, top edge gilt, fore and bottom edges untrimmed, embossed oval cameo of the America's Cup on upper board, spine titled and ruled in gilt, vertical gilt rule to both boards.
