(Lute) Jerstad (1936 ? 1998) was an American mountaineer and mountain guide who was a member of the 1963 American Mount Everest Expedition, reaching the summit of Mount Everest on May 22, 1963 with Barry Bishop. Born in Minnesota, he emigrated to the Pacific Northwest as a teenager, and earned degrees from Pacific Lutheran University, WSU, and the University of Oregon. After a brief career as a college professor, he founded Lute Jerstad Adventures, a trekking, river rafting and mountaineering service. John Dennis McCallum (1924-1988) grew up in Tacoma, Washington. A journalism graduate of Washington State University (WSU), McCallum played briefly in professional baseball with the Portland Beavers in the Pacific Coast League, and then began his professional writing career. First, he worked as a staff journalist for several Pacific Northwest newspapers, then moved to New York, beginning his work there with a daily sports column for a small tabloid newspaper. Within a few years, he had a nationally syndicated column for the Newspaper Enterprise Association. He published his first book in 1954, eventually producing nearly 40 in total, mostly popular biographies and sports reference books. His books include sole-authored works as well as many collaborations, and some projects where he operated behind the scenes as a ghostwriter. In addition to these activities, he engaged in a variety of editorial work, and served as public relations director for the National Football Hall of Fame. Among his many honors, he was named to the Washington State Sports Hall of Fame. [Taken from the guide to his papers at Washington State University] It is almost certain that the Jarstad family, to whom the book is inscribed, is John Otis Jarstad, his wife Barbara Ann, and their four children. John Jarstad (1920-1999; probably no relation to Lute Jerstad) was a pioneer in broadcasting. He had been a television and radio sports announcer, a newspaper editor, a business owner and a Tacoma city councilman. He taught communications at the University of Puget Sound and was the voice of University of Washington Huskies football and basketball, Seattle Rainiers baseball, and UPS and Pacific Lutheran University football. His businesses included Ski Hut-Honda Sporting Goods, charter fishing boats, and Jarstad Productions (film production, editing and cinematography). [Info. taken from an obituary. [see a file in John McCallum's personal papers on Jarstad Productions] An important work on climbing Mt. Everest, as well as a copy associated with several Washingtonians. Seller Inventory # 009331
