1 vol. 8vo (250 x 170 mm) with: frontispiece; 159 pp. including tables; 19 full-page out-of-text illustrations (17 photographs and 2 engravings); numerous engraved vignettes in the text. Autograph signed letter: "To Mr William Bartlett". Armorial bookplate of Thierry d'Erceville. Full beige cloth, first board titled and illustrated in black and red, smooth titled spine. First edition of these lessons in stagecoach driving by Edwin Howlett (1835-1914), master harness driver and teacher. Initiated from the age of 16 by his father, himself a coachman, Edwin Howlett accumulated a wealth of experience that earned him recognition and, later, the right to teach his discipline. The art of harnessing has known many masters, including: Garsault (France), Beno von Achenbach (Germany), Beaufort (Great Britain), F. Rogers (United States) and C. Volpini (Italy). However, Edwin Howlett is undoubtedly one of the most renowned in the field, as his principles of "English-style" driving, which he describes in this book, are still widely applied today. In the first part, the author gives a complete presentation of the elements available to the coachman: the whip, the reins, the lamps, the brake and so on. In the second part, he provides a lesson for each maneuver that a good coachman must master: how to start, to turn right angle to right or to the left, drive through a gateway to the left, to back, to turn around a fountain etc. The book is dedicated to W. G. Tiffany, one of the author's oldest clients and friends, and to his students, without whom he would not have undertaken to write such a work, for lack of skill as an author. A fine copy of these lessons in stagecoach driving from a renowned master of this field.
