Paul Heiney clearly loves animals, particularly cows, and is saddened and angry at their treatement on modern farms. Traditional animal husbandry has been overtaken by cruelty and squalor in the name of profit, greed and convenience. Around this theme, Heiney tells his compelling tale, harrowing at times, and always entertaining. The intrigue, humour and suspense keep the reader enthralled to the last contortions in the plot.

There are just the right number of principal characters, who are cleverly introduced and entirely plausible, particularly in their relationships with the farm animals. From the jolly cowman, the characters spring to life under Heiney's calculated writing . . .

Just whenever the reader might be about to relax a little, a dramatic and macabre event adds to the tension. Clever use of the Internet, manipulation of vulnerable characters and the activities of big business result in a fiendish plot. The ending is unpredictable and the last 20 or so pages deserve careful reading. Indeed, every sentence is relevant to the final twists.

Animal rights activists are evidently involved, but Heiney always maintains a highly ethical control of this vexed issue and readers should not come to snap judgements midway through. Clearly there would not be any animal rights activists were there not any perceived animal cruelty. Heiney is among only a small band of authors who have the courage and knowledge to cover these issues without alienating the reader.

This book is no mere outpouring by an articulate and moral farmer. It establishes the author as a convincing novelist in his own right . . . more readable than John Grisham! Everyone should read it, and most of you will have an enthralling six hours.
