Difficult to make out the middle of the inscription, but likely better or more familiar eyes can do so. Paul Ehrlich is best known for his deeply influential and controversial bookThe Population Bomb(1968)about overpopulation and resource scarcity, a topic which has defined his career and perhaps overshadowed his distinguished achievements in ecology and conservation biology (including classic butterfly studies). The book was called alarmist by some, but Ehrlich years later said that"perhaps the most serious flaw inThe Bombwas that it was much too optimistic about the future." His wife Anne Ehrlich has been his steady collaborator and co-author, for which she probably has been under-recognized. In this ambitious and interdisciplinary book, "the Ehrlichs gracefully weaves together rite theories of Darwin, empirical studies of fruit flies, lizards, and disease, the fossil record, the psychology of perception and belief systems, the nature of the human genome, and the power of culture and environment into a single illuminating thread."A fine book in fine jacket.

About the Author

Paul R. Ehrlich is Bing Professor of Population Studies and professor of biological sciences at Stanford University and a fellow of the Beijer Institute of Ecological Economics. Anne H. Ehrlich is affiliated with Stanford's Department of Biological Sciences and Center for Conservation Biology, and is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

The daughter of James Fenimore Cooper, Susan Cooper was also an accomplished watercolorist, and her birds from Rural Hours populate these pages. Her rendering of a "chimney swallow" (now known as a swift) serves as our logo and mascot: sleek and elevated, part sky and part city street. Rural Hours is mainly a project of writer and teacher Nick Neely. Along with a pair of MFA degrees in nonfiction and poetry, Nick has a Master's in Literature and Environment from the University of Nevada, Reno. He has much expertise and years of experience in the field of eco-writing. His first book, Coast Range, was a finalist for John Burroughs Medal for nature writing and his second book, Alta California--about a 12-week trek he made along the California coast--was a Los Angeles Times bestseller. Rural Hours is a young venture, but we aspire to be among the leaders in the field of rare and interesting eco-writing. We believe, emphatically, that environmental literature and its preservation is in the service of the preservation of the world. If you are a consumer you can withdraw from the contract in accordance with the following. Consumer means any natural person who is acting for purposes which are outside his trade, business, craft or profession.

Statutory right to withdraw

You have the right to withdraw from this contract within 14 days without giving any reason.

The withdrawal period will expire after 14 days from the day on which you acquire, or a third party other than the carrier and indicated by you acquires, physical possession of the last good or the last lot or piece.

To exercise the right of withdrawal, electronically fill in and submit a clear statement on our website, under "My Purchases" in "My Account". We will communicate to you an acknowledgement of receipt of such a withdrawal on a durable medium (e.g. by e-mail) without delay.

To meet the withdrawal deadline, it is sufficient for you to send your communication concerning your exercise of the right of withdrawal before the withdrawal period has expired.

Effects of withdrawal

If you withdraw from this contract, we will reimburse to you all payments received from you, including the costs of delivery (except for the supplementary costs arising if you chose a type of delivery other than the least expensive type of standard delivery offered by us).

We may make a deduction from the reimbursement for loss in value of any goods supplied, if the loss is the result of unnecessary handling by you.

We will make the reimbursement without undue delay, and not later than 14 days after the day on which we are informed about your decision to withdraw from this contract.
