12mo. Pp. 184. Black cloth with gilt titles on the spine. Leaves of wartime paper variably toned and fragile with a few chips and closed tears, front free endpaper inscribed in ink. In the color illustrated dust jacket with price intact on the front flap: spine ends chipped and edges rubbed, colors remain vivid. The first of four Dr. Mary Finney novels, set in the Belgian Congo. The author John Canaday, long-time art critic at the New York Times, has inscribed this copy "Lucky Hoop! p. 87 / Caroline from John 'Matthew Head'" to Caroline Houser, a noted Greek art historian and professor at Smith College. On the referenced page Gabrielle Boutegourde relinquishes her virginity to Hooper Taliaferro.Dust jacket is now housed in a removable clear archival sleeve.
