First edition. Illustrations by H. T. Dunn; 149 pp. 8vo. Signed and inscribed by Eugene Manlove Rhodes, to author and journalist George Creel: "George Creel:/ American Citizen:/ Endured by nature with/ certain unavailable/ rights./ This is to express/ my resentment because/ you beat me to it/ on skinning alive/ of certain exponents/ of the rude in literature/ Yours truly/ E M Rhodes R.F.D." (inscribed by Rhodes on the front flyleaf, over the entire page). Original, vintage, photographic portrait of Eugene Rhodes, measuring 3 1/2 by 5 1/2 inches, affixed to the front pastedown; portrait depicts the author, directly facing the camera, from the shoulders up, wearing a dark, vested suit and tie, and a tan, wide-brimmed hat; a striking portrait. George Creel (1876-1953), to whom Eugene Rhodes inscribed the book, was a politician, investigative journalist, and author of over a dozen books, including 'How We Advertised America' (published in 1920). During World War I, he served as head of the United States Committee on Public Information, in 1935 he served on the Advisory Board of the WPA, and he ran, unsuccessfully, for Governor of California (as a Democratic candidate, for the nomination, against author Upton Sinclair). A nice association copy, with a warm inscription from Eugene Manlove Rhodes to George Creel, revealing their close professional friendship. Novelist, and poet, Eugene Manlove Rhodes (1869-1934) was born in Nebraska, and his family settled in New Mexico, in 1881. He attended University of the Pacific, where he wrote for the college newspaper, and became a novelist. He married, and returned to New Mexico; he later moved to New York, to help care for his wife's father, where he farmed, and wrote about New Mexico. In 1926 he returned to Santa Fe, later moving to Alamogordo, and eventually to Three Rivers, New Mexico. He moved to Pacific Beach, California, in 1930, due to poor health, and died four years later. The author of fiction, and short stories, many of which are set in New Mexico (biographer Edwin W. Gaston referred to Rhodes as the 'Cowboy Chronicler'); he was inducted into the Hall of Great Westerners (of the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum), in 1958. Publisher's crimson pictorial cloth. The binding has light wear at tips of spine, one page has a small tear at fore-edge margin, else a very good copy. The rear endpapers have offset tanning, from the original bookseller's sale's receipt for this book (from the distinguished Dawson's Book Shop, in Los Angeles, noting that the cost of the book, in 1957, was $40.00) Illustrations by H. T. Dunn; 149 pp. 8vo.
