Containing an original Photogravure of Robert Frank's 'Jay, New York, 1954', and signed by the photographer. Robert Frank (1924-2019) is considered one of photography's most influential figures, defining the aesthetics of documentary photographs. The Swiss-born photographer emigrated to New York in 1947 where he found commercial work, most notably at Harper's Bazaar. In 1955 and '56, Frank went on a series of trips across the US, documenting the nation. The resulting body of work is a fierce critique of American society in which Frank's distanced view revealed an alienated population. First published in Paris, the subsequent 1959 US edition sparked outrage. While widely criticised as anti-American, it soon gained an almost cultish prestige with younger generations of photographers. 'Les Américains' established Frank's spontaneous 'shooting from the hip' style of photojournalism. Frank's personal and professional development as a photographer is deeply connected the US. He produce this speical edition using his 1954 photograph 'Jay, New York' (a work that was first published in 'Les Américains') as an illustration to the foundational text of the US. In this edition, historian David Armitage (born 1965) provides an afterword discussing the significance of the declaration and including a section of the original text which was subsequently deleted that describes the horrors of slavery. This copy is numbered 159 of 500. There is a small indenter to one edge of the external clamshell box but other this copy is as new.…
