Item description from seller

[a good sound copy, mild bumping to the lower corners; the jacket shows just minor wear and itsy-bitsy paper loss at several corners]. INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author on the front endpaper: "September 28, 1949 / For Bacon Collamore -- / May you find this novel worthy of / your collection. / Best wishes - / Roger Dooley." This "nostalgic and endearing" novel is "a family-chronicle story about the members of the Shanahan clan in the days of Buffalo's turbulent Irish First Ward and of the effects of selfishness and pride, materialism and the American idea of progress upon their age." The protagonist is Rose Shanahan, a young teacher, who's dumped by the wishy-washy guy she's in love with, but still carries a torch for him and thus rebuffs the attentions of an ambitious young policeman; things get complicated when the first guy comes back to town. "Interwoven with the problems of Rose is the story of the other oft-divided branches of the Shanahan clan in its feasts and its feuds, its wakes and weddings, with the rich ones and the repressed ones, the social climbers and the drunkards. From behind the lace curtains of solid respectability comes now a revelation of all the laughter and tears of a way of life neither truly Irish nor typically American, yet somehow both." (A previous seller's penciled note on the front endpaper notes this as having been "Carter Burden's copy.") ***This book is among the nearly 150 items offered in ReadInk's new Catalog Number 4, "Booking Passage: Books on the Immigrant Experience." You can access this catalog and its contents in any one of three ways: (1) email us to request a PDF to be emailed to you; (2) view or download the catalog from the link on our website's main page; (3) browse the books individually (including a few that didn't make the cut for the catalog) on our website under these two subject headings: "Immigration: Fiction" and "Immigration: Non-fiction." Store description

Welcome to ReadInk (rhymes with "Dead Ink"), now in our 29th year of putting interesting books into the hands of interested people. **** Although I occasionally lapse into the "royal we" voice, ReadInk is just me, from one end of the pipeline to the other: buying, cataloging, customer service, shipping, you name it. Nothing here is automated, and every order or inquiry gets my prompt, personal attention. **** In describing a book's physical condition, I employ standard book-grading terminology (Good/Very Good/Fine, with various in-between gradations as appropriate) and do my best to avoid both excessive jargon and overly-finicky detail. My goal is always to present a faithful impression of a book's condition and appearance; significant flaws are individually noted, or if too numerous are succinctly summarized. **** Books are more than just physical objects, however: they are also intellectual/information vessels, and in almost every case I also include some information about a book's content in my listing, even if it's only a carefully chosen quotation from the dust jacket copy. (This may sound like a small thing, but take a look sometime and you'll see how amazingly few sellers bother with this, especially in the case of older fiction, which is one of my specialties.) **** I take great care (and pride) in my packaging of books for shipment; I figure it's my responsibility to ensure that each book I send out will withstand the rigors of the U.S. Postal System, and will reach its new owner in the same condition as advertised. (A sturdy box or an unbendable package is always involved.) **** That's all there is to ReadInk: just a guy who has loved books all my life (perhaps to excess) and entered the trade in my "middle years" to see what I could make of it. And I'm still finding out. **** To view my inventory exclusively, head over to my website -- www.readinkbooks.com. ---- Howard Prouty, prop.…
