Large octavo (6-5/8 X 10-3/8th inches) hand-numbered 46 of a stated limited edition of 202 copies, privately printed for the author at The Lakeside Press, R.R. Donnelley & Sons Co., and inscribed and signed by the author to a preliminary blank "To my friend Thomas Elliot Donnelley with grateful appreciation of the painstaking care exercised by the Lakeside Press in the printing of this book." Paper spine label intact though showing some rub; gilt heraldic device to front board still bright. Some of the 207 pages (to include the Index) have not been opened. Pages 115-116 have suffered a horizontal tear (probably because that group of 4 pp. has NOT been cut open) but remain intact with no loss. (To read this book, new owner will have to open some of the pages with a blunt-edged knife.) From 1649 and for a period of 35 years -- though he was briefly turned out in 1676 due to his sympathetic treatment of the Indians during King Philip's War -- the subject Gookin served as Deputy from Cambridge to the General Court of Boston. He also served Cambridge as selectman from 1660 to 1672, and was appointed the first Superintendent of the Praying Indians. In this capacity he traveled to Indian settlements, often accompanied by his friend the Rev. John Eliot. Gookin -- who was a founder of the settlement of Worcester, though Indians twice burned it down -- wrote two books on the Indians: "Historical Collections of the Indians in New England" (completed in 1674, published by the Massachusetts Historical Society, 1792), and "The Doings and Sufferings of the Christian Indians (completed 1677, published 1836). He also wrote a History of New England, of which only portions have survived. Reduced from $1,675.
