Signed and inscribed by Walter Trier to the first blank page, the inscription reads; "To Jan Gilbert from Walter Trier, Cole Green, Herts, October 1944". Provenance: In 1943 Jan Gilbert, with his parents, stayed at the Cowper Arms, Cole Green, Hertfordshire to escape the bombing of London. Once there his family met Walter and Helen Trier whom they made friends with. Walter signed the book for Jan and stayed in touch with his family sending cards at Christmas even after the illustrator had moved to Canada after the war. The book is bound in the original pictorial cloth and has all pages and illustrations complete. Quite a cheaply produced war-time publication, the cloth seems to be over a type of corrugated card which means it has ridges and is quite floppy. There is no front end paper, but I can't tell if this is missing or if it was never produced with one, due to war-time cuts. Jan Gilbert has signed the title page in pen, written his name, age (11) and address in pencil to the last blank page and blind-stamped his address to the title page and first blank page. The pages are coming away from the binding and the front hinge is cracked. The title page and pastedowns have some foxing. Some pages have a juvenile small inscription. The page signed by Trier has a one inch tear to the bottom edge. One page has a tape repair to the front and back of a 2 inch tear. Seller Inventory # 010211
