From the Inside Flap
Donald MacDonell trained at RAF Cranwell in the 1930's, after which he was posted to No.54 Squadron, before detachment to the Fleet Air Arm in the Mediterranean. During the Phoney War he served at the Air Ministry, but when hostilities commenced he became CO of No 64 Spitfire Squadron at Kenley and fought in the Battle of Britain over Kent, being awarded the DFC. Then to Leconfield to train new pilots before more operations from Hornchurch. In March 1941 the Author was shot down over the English Channel by Werner Moëlders and rescued by the enemy. Over four years were spent in German POW camps - including Stalag Luft III where he helped organise the 'Wooden Horse' escape. The Allied POWs were liberated - after a gruelling winter march - by Russian troops.
On repatriation MacDonell meets his son for the first time and discovers that his wife is mentally ill. As a Wing Commander he works at the Cabinet Office before moving to Headquarters Flying Training Command. He is then appointed Chief Flying Instructor at Cranwell, but eventually the stresses of bringing up a motherless family begin to tell. However, he successfully applies for the post of British Air Attaché in Moscow and spends a year learning Russian at Cambridge University and in Paris. Then to the Joint Services School for Linguists, the War Cabinet Office and the Joint Services Staff College.
In Moscow MacDonell experiences the frustrations of the Soviet system during the Cold War, meets Khrushchev, Bulganin and Mikoyan and is involved in negotiations for the first civilian flights between London and Moscow.
Air Commodore MacDonell of Glengarry has written this memoir with both humour and understatement; it is all too easy to underestimate the hardship he endured whilst captive and the significant part he played in both combat and diplomatic circles.
