About this Item
Hardback. SIGNED. In the 1870s all roads in Northeast Texas led to Jefferson, "Queen of the Cypress." It was the centre of wealth in a pioneer country and was the warehouse for merchants for as far west as Dallas. On January 19, 1877, a young couple came to this thriving city. They registered at the Brooks House as A. Monroe and wife. They were a handsome couple, and she wore many large genuine diamonds. Her name was Bessie; and the natives after seeing her diamonds, named her "Diamond Bessie". On Sunday after their arrival, they were seen walking across the bayou bridge on the Marshall Road. He returned alone. Two days later he left town and two weeks later she was found in the woods with a bullet hole in her head. He was traced to Cincinnati, and it was found that his name was Rothschild, the son of a wealthy jeweller. He was brought back to Jefferson and indicted for her murder. The case attracted much publicity, a young man named Rothschild charged with the murder of a yhoung, beautiful woman, and the case was, in fact, one of Texas' big name cases. Over the next 4yrs. the finest legal talent of Texas duelled over whether he was guilty. Once he was sentenced to be hanged, but this trial was reversed by the Appellate Court. Finally a jury said "not guilty." Illus., Appendices, + Bibliog. 183pp. 8vo. h/back. From the library of true-crime writer, Wilfred Gregg, with his personal b/plate. SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR.
