Inscribed first edition of this early novel by the famous Japanese American author, about the daughter of a nouveau-riche father who hopes to see her married to a nobleman, set in pre-war Japan. Sugimoto rose to fame with the publication of her bestselling 1925 novelized memoir, A DAUGHTER OF THE SAMURAI, which detailed the story of her immigration to the United States from her birthplace in Japan via an arranged marriage. Born in the immediate wake of the Meiji Restoration, Sugimoto dramatizes in her novels this complex period when the feudal system of the samurai was being mixed and sometimes supplanted by Western influences in commerce and technology. This follow-up, A DAUGHTER OF THE NARIKIN, is also one of the earliest novels published by a Japanese American woman writer, and focuses on the class conflicts arising partly from the new prosperity of the age. A notable landmark in US literature. 8'' x 5.5''. Original black moiré cloth stamped in blind, gilt-letted spine. In original unclipped ($2.50) color pictorial dust jacket. Light tan endpapers. xii, 325, [1] pages. Inscribed by Sugimoto in blue ink: "Some day I hope to see / face to face / 'my ball- / bouncing friend Yukiko' - / Etsu Inagaki Sugimoto / Aoyama Tokyo - Spring, 1933" with her name added in kanji with black brush. Separate inscription from another hand ("Ogilvie") in Tokyo, dated April 1933, above Sugimoto's inscription. Jacket with light soil, a few small chips, somewhat toned spine. Book with scattered foxing to edges, else clean and bright. Seller Inventory # 55320
