One of only 20 numbered copies on Japon, the seuls grands papiers, in addition to 60 on Hollande. 8vo., [iv], 213, [1] pp. Beautifully bound in a luxuriant gilt-decorated contemporary half morocco with marbled boards and endpapers. The edition is embossed with the stamp of Georges Canape, a renowned French master bookbinder. A fine, well-preserved example. Colophon states: Il a �t� tir� de cet ouvrage vingt exemplaires sur Japon et soixante exemplaires sur Hollande, num�rot�s et paraph�s par l �diteur. This copy one of the 20 on Japon, the rarest and most desirable issue. Maurice Maeterlinck (1862 1949), Belgian Nobel Laureate in Literature (1911), offers here a pacifist reflection on the devastation of the Great War, blending symbolist poetics with urgent political commentary.
