Octavo, 355pp., illustrated. A fine, crisp copy in the publisher's pale red cloth. SIGNED by Longworth on the front free endpaper, and uncommon thus. In a very near fine dust ajceket, just a tinge rubbed and creased. The daughter of President Theodore Roosevelt, Alice Roosevelt Longworth had a personality as big as her father's. A prominent socialite, she married Nicholas Longworth during her father's administration, one of the largest social events ever held at the White House. Alice R. Longworth continued to lead a politically engaged life for another 75 years, dying in 1980 at the age of 96. Seller Inventory # 10562

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good+. Early printing. B&W Illustrations; SIGNED EDITION. This copy includes a hand signed (autograph) visiting card, signed by Alice Roosevelt Longworth, included inside Mrs. Longworth's personal envelope. There is a typed note, signed by the author's secretary, Letitia Elliott. The book is in Very Good+ condition and is lacking a dust jacket. This is an early printing, but not a First Edition. The spine ends and corners of the book covers have some light bumping and rubbing. The text pages are clean and bright. There is also a previous owner's inked name and date on the front endpaper. President Theodore Roosevelt and his only child with his first wife, Alice Hathaway Lee Roosevelt. Longworth led an unconventional and controversial life. Dust jacket protected with a mylar covering, price uncut: "$3.00." Chipping on all jacket edges, with a large open tear at base of spine and a smaller open tear on the jacket back cover. Moderate shelf wear and scuffing on jacket front cover, heavier on back cover. Small closed tears and creases along jacket top edge. Boards are bound in red cloth. Mild soiling to boards, with discoloration along spine. Rubbing to head of spine and fore corners. Light bumping to head and tail of spine and bottom fore corners. Spine is lightly cocked. Text block shows expected age toning throughout, with small scuff on bottom edge. Name of former owner inscribed with date in black ink on front flyleaf. Inscribed in purple ink by Alice Roosevelt Longworth on first free endpaper: "February 1979 -- / Mr. Safire from / Alice Longworth". Shelved in Room A. First edition, with Scribner's "A" on copyright page. This copy is inscribed to William Safire, a conservative political theorist and author. While there's little evidence to support a meaningful relationship between the pair, in 1968 Roosevelt and Safire did correspond regarding whether Roosevelt coined the phrase "little man on a wedding cake" as a description of Thomas E. In the publisher's dust jacket, wear to edges, $3.00 on front flap, shelf wear, free of restoration, a scarce jacket which was paired with this copy. Bookplate of Margaret Sanger on front pastedown. Inscribed on the front free endpaper in pencil: "Nov. 1933 / Margaret Sanger / 3501 Newark St / Wash DC." Alice Roosevelt Longworth (1884-1980) was the daughter of President Theodore Roosevelt and his first wife, Alice Hathaway Lee. She was married to Nicholas Longworth III, 38th Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, until his death in 1931. Alice would spend the remainder of her life in Washington DC, working through political circles and supporting causes she believed in. She died in 1980 at the age of 96. Margaret Sanger (1879-1966) was a lifelong advocate for birth control, a term she popularized.
