Second Printing. "When President Kennedy announced America's commitment to the exploration of space in 1961, he launched the greatest adventure of the second half of the twentieth century. A handful of singular men and women stepped forward to spearhead that national quest, and Frank Borman was one of them. As an astronaut, Borman flew two of NASA's riskiest missions: Gemini 7 launched him on a fourteen-day trip in a crew compartment that wasn't much bigger than the front seat of a Volkswagen Beetle, to the first manned-spacecraft rendezvous in orbit: Apollo 8, the first manned voyage around the moon, took Borman and his crew a half-million miles through space. They were the first human beings who actually saw the world in its totality. After Apollo 8, Borman was NASA's liaison with the White House for the first lunar landing mission, Apollo 11, which paved the way for the delicate diplomatic missions he would later conduct in Europe and the USSR. Borman was offered cabinet-level positions by three American Presidents, and he addressed joint sessions of Congress twice. But if his struggles, his dedication, his achievements, and the personal sacrifices he made up to this point had exacted a price from himself and the family that had stood by him, his new career would provide an even greater test of the values he cherished most. When Borman was appointed president of Eastern Airlines in May 1975, he assumed responsibility for a $1 billion deficit, a very competitive, short-haul route system, unrealistic and unproductive labor contracts, and a fleet that was fuel-inefficient and mostly obsolete. Borman went to work. Along with a modernized fleet and improved service, he established good relations with the unions and achieved unprecedented management stability. Between 1976 and 1980 Eastern enjoyed the most profitable four-year period in its history. Then came deregulation of the airline industry and all its attendant challenges and crises. In one of the most gripping and suspenseful boardroom dramas ever told, Borman describes the excruciating battle to keep Eastern alive and independent. With the help of Robert J. Serling, Frnak Borman has written a full-blown thoroughly involving autobiography that is so authoritative, and so rich in detail about an important and thrilling era in our history, that it places the reader right in the middle of the excitement and tragedy of it all. It is the story of a homegrown American hero who carved out a chunk of that history, both in the wild blue yonder and here on earth." - from the inner front and rear jacket flaps.
