Assumed first edition, stated “1st Printing”, with no number line. 9-3/8” tall, 423 numbered pages includes 7 pages after the text of line drawings, and “Acknowledgements”. One-piece maroon binding, silver lettering on spine only, front board is plain; plain ivory end pages; fore edge is trimmed. Book is brand new and is pristine: book is square, exterior is spotlessly clean, no corners bumped, no edge dings; head and heel of spine undamaged; hinges very tight and not damaged in any fashion. Interior is spotlessly clean and completely unmarked; pages are tight and clean with no marks; no page corners folded or damaged; hinges quite strong and tight; spine undamaged; no staining or discoloration; no distortion of the book from reading or improper shelving; no remainder mark, not book club edition nor ex-library. Jacket is also brand new and also is pristine: it is clean; no tears, folds, creases or fading; head and heel of spine undamaged; publisher’s original price of “U.S.A. $32.00 / Canada $44.00” listed on the upper right corner of front flap. Jacket is now protected by mylar jacket cover. Signed by the author in medium thick black felt-tipped pen on the title page above and over his printed name; below his signature, in thin black felt pen he has added the the date (“June 9, 2026”, which was the book's release date) and the location (“St. Louis”), all done in my presence on June 9, 2026 at the Clark Family branch of the Saint Louis County (MO) Library. It was a very low-key and engaging program in which he told a bit of the plot and talked about art and art education today, why such education is important and what can be done to revive/improve it. Cricket Dib, born on the American prairie, has no particular prospects or ambitions until, in grade school, he realizes he can draw. He soon meets a girl, Olympia Argyros, one year older, who is captivating and brilliant and far more worldly. Recognizing his talent, she convinces him to deface, with profound vulgarity, a popular playground. Under her direction, he does it willingly, already in love, and thus begins a sixty-five-year entwining between Cricket and Olympia, encompassing friendship, working partnership and love affair. Together they go to art school—an experience of dubious value—and then navigate the art world for the next fifty years, together and apart.
Contrapposto is a moving and very funny novel about allies and art, and what it means to be an artist. All through their lives, Cricket sees Olympia as his soulmate and destiny, and while she is always his champion, romantically her eyes are always seeking something—and someone—else. Their love changes over the decades, but their commitment to each other, and their search for meaning in the making of art, never wanes. The novel spans the globe, from New York to Cambodia, Indiana to Paris, and follows Cricket and Olympia through sickness and health, war and death.
The novel is a wild and beautiful examination of the rules and market forces of the art world, but chiefly it’s about two friends who believe they can change that world, and bring new meaning to it, if only they can start their own movement, dodge charlatans, remain open-eyed and open-hearted, avoid going mad, avoid dying young of rare cancers, stay true to their ideals, and never tire of beauty. Not easy, but not impossible, either.

Terms of sale
I have collected books all my adult life and now must downsize my collections.
I have: hundreds of leather bound books, most Easton press but with some Franklin Mint; several thousand boys series books from the 1890's through the 1960's, most in jackets; and hundreds of modern first print signed volumes. All books are stored in low-light, smoke-free, bug-free, pet-free, mold-free and humidity controlled environment.

Right of withdrawal
If you are a consumer you can withdraw from the contract in accordance with the following. Consumer means any natural person who is acting for purposes which are outside his trade, business, craft or profession.
Information regarding the right of withdrawal
Statutory right to withdraw
You have the right to withdraw from this contract within 14 days without giving any reason.
The withdrawal period will expire after 14 days from the day on which you acquire, or a third party other than the carrier and indicated by you acquires, physical possession of the last good or the last lot or piece.
To exercise the right of withdrawal, electronically fill in and submit a clear statement on our website, under "My Purchases" in "My Account". We will communicate to you an acknowledgement of receipt of such a withdrawal on a durable medium (e.g. by e-mail) without delay.
To meet the withdrawal deadline, it is sufficient for you to send your communication concerning your exercise of the right of withdrawal before the withdrawal period has expired.
Effects of withdrawal
If you withdraw from this contract, we will reimburse to you all payments received from you, including the costs of delivery (except for the supplementary costs arising if you chose a type of delivery other than the least expensive type of standard delivery offered by us).
We may make a deduction from the reimbursement for loss in value of any goods supplied, if the loss is the result of unnecessary handling by you.
We will make the reimbursement without undue delay, and not later than 14 days after the day on which we are informed about your decision to withdraw from this contract.
We will make the reimbursement using the same means of payment as you used for the initial transaction, unless you have expressly agreed otherwise; in any event, you will not incur any fees as a result of such reimbursement.
We may withhold reimbursement until we have received the goods back, or you have supplied evidence of having sent back the goods, whichever is the earliest.
You shall send back the goods or hand them over to OldBooksFromTheBasement, Maryland Heights, Missouri, U.S.A., without undue delay and in any event not later than 14 days from the day on which you communicate your withdrawal from this contract to us. The deadline is met if you send back the goods before the period of 14 days has expired. You will have to bear the direct cost of returning the goods. You are only liable for any diminished value of the goods resulting from the handling other than what is necessary to establish the nature, characteristics and functioning of the goods.
Exceptions to the right of withdrawal
The right of withdrawal does not apply to:
- The delivery of newspapers, journals or magazines with the exception of subscription contracts; and
- The supply of digital content which is not supplied on a tangible medium (e.g. on a CD or DVD) if you accepted when you placed your order that we could start to deliver it, and that you could not withdraw once delivery had started.
