Item description from seller

First Edition. Signed and inscribed by the author Weinberg Herman to director and editor Irving Lerner. Inscribed at the front free endpaper: “For Irving Lerner, with best wishes & the hope our paths will cross again! Herman Weinberg, 9/4/73”. Oversize format. Lavish and painstaking reproduction of Austrian-American director Erich von Stroheim’s epic film Greed, based on Frank Norris’s novel ‘McTeague’. Very good plus with a touch of foxing to the preliminaries in the original plastic dust jacket which is a bit dust soiled. The original version of ‘Greed’ was 9 1/2 hours long, but the 1924 released version was radically trimmed down to a 2 1/2 hour-long film. This book attempts to come as close as possible to recreating Von Stroheim’s original vision and is illustrated with some four hundred photographs. Greed stars Gibson Gowland, Zasu Pitts, and Jean Hersholt in the story of how a sudden fortune won from a lottery fans the flames of such destructive greed that it ruins the lives of the three people involved. Irving Lerner (1909 - 1976) was an early member of Workers Film and Photo League and film critic for the left wing journals New Masses and New Theatre. He is best known for directing the films Murder by Contract (1958), City of Fear (1959), Cry of Battle (1963) and for producing Captain Apache (1971). A stunning work of creativity and scholarship. Listed in 100 Books on Hollywood & the Movies.…
