Each volume is INSCRIBED to the poet's good friends. The collection also includes an ALS, a TLS, an INSCRIBED postcard with poem, and INSCRIBED "2 pages from a Colorado River Journal". Love Letter from an Impossible Land, with full-page manuscript poem; (Yale University Press, Second printing, 1944); Ships and Other Figures (Princeton University Press, First printing, 1948); The Open Sea and Other Poems (Alfred A. Knopf, First printing, 1957). Also included in the collection is Meredith's "Reasons for Poetry & the Reason for Criticism: Two Lectures delivered at the Library of Congress on May 7, 1979, and May 5, 1980". Small 8vo; various paginations. Minor wear to dustjackets (one price-clipped) else fine condition. William Morris Meredith Jr. (1919 2007), an American poet and educator, served as Chancellor of the Academy of American Poets (1964 to 1987), the position which in 1985 became the Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress. Meredith has the distinction of being the first gay poet to receive this honor. Additionally, during his life, Meredith was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry, a Los Angeles Times Book Award, the National Book Award for Poetry for Effort at Speech, a Guggenheim Foundation fellowship, the Harriet Monroe Memorial Prize, the Carl Sandburg Award, and the International Vaptsarov Prize in Poetry.
