Rare collection of photographs of the first atomic bomb test "Able" at Bikini Atoll with letters of eyewitness accounts of the first atomic bomb testing and the second test "Baker" at Bikini Atoll. Four photographs of the detonation of the first atomic bomb test, "Able." Two depicting mushroom clouds in the ocean above an island. Two depicting mushroom clouds in the ocean and columns of water next to Navy ships with the beach of an island of Bikini Atoll in the foreground. Each in near fine condition. Accompanied with three letters of eyewitness accounts about the first and second atomic bomb tests. The first letter, dated June 12, 1946, is a revealing eyewitness account by a member of Operation Crossroads recounts the preparations leading up to the first test "Able", which took place on July 1 of that year, while also describing the day-to-day life of that soldier while stationed in the remote central Pacific islands. Signed "Bob" and addressed to a Mr. A.R. Sharples. The second letter, dated two weeks after the second test "Baker" (the first underwater nuclear explosion) on August 6, describes in detail that explosion. Originally enclosed with the second letter is an official mimeographed account of the explosion of the second bomb, dated June 12, observed by the crew aboard the USS Wharton, a US Navy troopship that transported observers to witness the blasts. Octavo, three typed pages and two hand-written pages, and two mailing envelopes. In near fine condition. Eyewitness accounts of this testing are very uncommon, and provide an inside glimpse of the beginnings of the nuclear arms race during the Cold War. The first and second atomic bomb tests at Bikini Atoll, known as Operation Crossroads, were conducted by the United States in July 1946 to evaluate the impact of nuclear weapons on naval vessels. The first test, Able, was an aerial detonation that produced limited damage, while the second, Baker, was an underwater explosion that caused significant contamination and demonstrated the complex environmental effects of nuclear warfare. These tests not only marked a pivotal moment in Cold War military strategy but also had lasting consequences for the displaced Bikini Atoll inhabitants and raised early concerns about nuclear fallout and ecological harm.

The cancellation period will expire after 14 days from the day on which you acquire, or a third party other than the carrier and indicated by you acquires, physical possession of the the last good or the last lot or piece.
To exercise the right to cancel, you must inform us, Raptis Rare Books, ABAA/ ILAB, 147 Orchard Street, 05301, Brattleboro, Vermont, U.S.A., 1 8025791580, of your decision to cancel this contract by a clear statement (e.g. a letter sent by post, fax or e-mail). You may use the attached model cancellation form, but it is not obligatory. You can also electronically fill in and submit a clear statement on our website, under "My Purchases" in "My Account". If you use this option, we will communicate to you an acknowledgement of receipt of such a cancellation on a durable medium (e.g. by e-mail) without delay.
To meet the cancellation deadline, it is sufficient for you to send your communication concerning your exercise of the right to cancel before the cancellation period has expired.
Effects of cancellation
If you cancel this contract, we will reimburse to you all payments received from you, including the costs of delivery (except for the supplementary costs arising if you chose a type of delivery other than the least expensive type of standard delivery offered by us).
We may make a deduction from the reimbursement for loss in value of any goods supplied, if the loss is the result of unnecessary handling by you.
We will make the reimbursement without undue delay, and not later than 14 days after the day on which we are informed about your decision to cancel with contract.
We will make the reimbursement using the same means of payment as you used for the initial transaction, unless you have expressly agreed otherwise; in any event, you will not incur any fees as a result of such reimbursement.
We may withhold reimbursement until we have received the goods back or you have supplied evidence of having sent back the goods, whichever is the earliest.
You shall send back the goods or hand them over to us or Raptis Rare Books, ABAA/ ILAB, 147 Orchard Street, 05301, Brattleboro, Vermont, U.S.A., 1 8025791580, without undue delay and in any event not later than 14 days from the day on which you communicate your cancellation from this contract to us. The deadline is met if you send back the goods before the period of 14 days has expired. You will have to bear the direct cost of returning the goods. You are only liable for any diminished value of the goods resulting from the handling other than what is necessary to establish the nature, characteristics and functioning of the goods.
