Higham was born on June 20, 1925 in London England. He attended Hotchkiss Prep School in Connecticut. He earned his A.B. from Harvard, cum laude and then his M.A. from Claremont Graduate School in California. He received his Ph.D. from Harvard University. Robin was a Flight Sergeant Pilot for the Canadian Royal Air Force serving the Burma Road from 1943 until 1947. Robin was a professor of History at Kansas State University from 1963 until his retirement in 1999 where he mentored many graduate students. He also was a leader in the field of Military History, having written over 38 books and numerous publications.
