First edition, inscribed by the author on the title page, "For Diana, with all best wishes, Laurie Lee, 1987". It is here in a lovely example of the dust jacket, retaining the publisher's scarce wraparound band advertising it as a Book Society Choice. Lee's famous work presents "a highly evocative and nostalgic account of his country boyhood in a secluded Cotswold valley" (Birch & Hooper, p. 403). The Hogarth Press commissioned it ten years prior to publication. Lee was finally galvanized into writing it after receiving the "editorial director Norah Smallwood's offer to pay him 'to give up all other work and get on with it'" (Grove, p. 289). Dinah Birch & Katy Hooper, Oxford Concise Companion to English Literature, 2013; Valerie Grove, Laurie Lee: the Well-Loved Stranger, 2000. Octavo. Frontispiece and line drawings in the text by John Ward. Original green boards, spine lettered in gilt. With dust jacket, and the publisher's pink wraparound band. Spine ends gently bumped, foxing to edges and outer leaves; jacket presenting sharp, faint hint of sunning to spine, one repaired short closed tear, occasional tiny wear subtly restored, unclipped: a very good copy in near-fine jacket.
