First edition, first impression, signed by the author on the half title. The book had been commissioned by the Hogarth Press ten years prior to its publication, with Lee finally galvanized into writing it after receiving the "editorial director Norah Smallwood's offer to pay him 'to give up all other work and get on with it'." Lee's price was "what seemed to her the astonishingly small sum of �500" (Grove, p. 289). Valerie Grove, Laurie Lee: the Well-Loved Stranger, 2000. Octavo. Frontispiece and line drawings in text, including some full-page, all by John Ward. Original green boards, spine lettered in gilt. With dust jacket by John Ward. Spine ends and corners bumped, small mark to fore edge; jacket unclipped, extremities rubbed, loss to foot of spine and insect damage to folds: a near-fine copy in good jacket.
