First edition of the classic and still authoritative study of the Chinese Educational Mission and the first generation of Chinese students sent to the United States during the late Qing period. Written by historian Thomas E. La Fargue, this pioneering work remains a cornerstone reference on the history of Chinese overseas education and the China Educational Mission of 1872-1881. Original yellow cloth. Ex-Union College Library copy with the usual institutional markings. Signed by the author on the front free endpaper. The volume is otherwise well preserved and presents attractively on the shelf. A notable association copy, enhanced by the scarcity of authenticated signatures of Thomas E. La Fargue. Signed copies are rarely encountered in the market. Condition Details: Very Good. Ex-library copy from Union College Library. No dust jacket. Author's autograph on front endpaper. A short closed tear is present at the copyright page near the gutter, without loss of text or affecting the binding integrity. Light library markings and normal evidence of institutional use. Binding sound and text block clean overall. An important work relating to Yung Wing, the Chinese Educational Mission, early Sino-American relations, and the modernization of late Qing China.…
