A very scarce first edition presentation copy of this commemorative Chesterton collection, inscribed by editor Rufus William Rauch and accompanied by personal correspondence and a photograph. In the publisher's original navy cloth binding. First edition, published for the Friends of the Library, following a commemorative celebration held at the University of Notre Dame in 1980. A presentation copy, inscribed by the editor, Rufus William Rauch, to the half-title. Additionally, loosely inserted is a typed letter dated 17 July 1983, addressed to Rauch and his wife, Beryll, thanking them for the book and recalling Chesterton's visit to Notre Dame and shared university memories. Accompanied by a colour photograph of Rufus and Beryll dated April 1983. A collection of essays commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of G. K. Chesterton's visiting professorship at the University of Notre Dame in the autumn of 1930. The essays explore Chesterton's literary achievements, religious thought and intellectual legacy, including his poetry, criticism of Charles Dickens, Father Brown stories and relationship with Thomist philosophy. Contributors include Ralph McInerny, Frederick J. Crosson and Lawrence J. Clipper. Rauch, who was a member of Notre Dame's faculty during Chesterton's visit, contributes a personal recollection and a study of his poetry. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, very smart. Slight bumping to extremities. Light fading and minor rubbing to perimeters of boards. Editor's signed presentation inscription to the half-title. Internally, firmly bound.
