True (UK) first edition, first printing. SIGNED ON THE TITLE PAGE , "With best wishes/ Susanna Gregory". A fine, fresh, unread copy in equally fine dust jacket. Hardcover. 472 pp. The tenth in this hugely popular series of historical mysteries set in 17th century London and featuring Parliamentarian spy/sleuth Thomas Chaloner. In this entry, Thomas is ordered to investigate the murder of a goldsmith-banker, one of the few to have survived the losses that drove others to bancruptcy. At the same tine, a French spy staggers across the city spreading the plague and Londoners fear that the Dutch fleet is preparing to invade. Signed copies of Gregory's British first editions are quite uncommon.
