xii, 526pp. With half-title. Bound for Hatchards of Piccadilly (stamp-signed to verso of FFEP) in contemporary gilt-tooled burgundy half-morocco, red cloth boards, T.E.G. Lightly rubbed and marked, with light surface wear to extremities, chipping at head of spine, bumping to corners, and small ink-stains to lower board. Several early inked inscriptions to FFEP, including ink-stamp 'From Miss Pearl Finch'. Spotting throughout. The first edition, finely bound for Hatchards, of the first published biographical work by English Liberal politician Archibald Primrose, 5th Earl of Rosebery (1847-1929), recounting the early life and times of Lord Chatham, or William Pitt the Elder (1708- 1778). Rosebery completed further biographies of Pitt the Younger, Napoleon, and Lord Randolph Churchill. Size: 8vo.

Established 2007, Antiquates Ltd is an Antiquarian bookseller with a large, custom built shop in the heart of the Dorset countryside. We sell fine and rare books from our Wareham shop, in catalogues, and via our website (www.antiquates.co.uk). Specialising in early printed books both English and Continental, fine English Literature, and books by, for, and about Women and Children, we nevertheless stock a wide range of works on paper from 1500-present - including modern first editions. Our bias is towards the unusual, the interesting and the important - and always have a good stock of rare books by local authors such as T.E.
