Enclosed is a personal check signed by Williams and made out to his lover Robert Carroll. Robert Carroll was a West Virginian-born Vietnam War veteran and aspiring novelist who met Williams in 1972 when the playwright was in his '60's and he was just 25. Williams described Carroll's behavior as a combination of "sweetness" and beastliness," and the pair carried on a long and tormented romance until 1979. Williams always remained fond of Carroll and helped him with his career as well as left him a generous bequest in his will. Carroll's memoir "Chez Nous: My Intimate Life with Tennessee Williams" (2016) describes his mercurial relationship with the aging playwright.
