First edition, first printing. Signed by the author. Small quarto (9 x 6 1/2 inches; 229 x 165 mm.). 63, [1, blank] pp. Illustrated throughout in color by Dr. Seuss. Minimal darkening to inside board edges. Original first issue pictorial dust jacket, with the Cat s tie printed in white and also showing a white snowball (later issues show the tie in blue and the snowball in blue). Jacket with minimal chipping at spine extremities and two very small, faint stains at lower edge; overall very clean and bright. A near fine, signed copy in a near fine dust jacket of Seuss s second Cat book scarce in the true first printing and especially so signed. The Cat in the Hat Comes Back was written after the phenomenal success of The Cat in the Hat (1957), which had revolutionized early childhood reading by showing that learning to read could be playful and imaginative. In this sequel, the mischievous Cat reappears on a snowy day, leaving chaos in his wake. The story introduces the "Little Cats A Z," a hidden army under the Cat s striped hat, whose final helper "Little Cat Z" unleashes the magical "Voom" that clears away the mess. Seuss s inventive blend of mischief and resolution once again turned the struggle of teaching children to read into a gleeful adventure. Younger & Hirsch 11.
