Item description from seller

[modest edgewear and age-toning to covers]. INSCRIBED and SIGNED in red ink on the front cover: "Greetings / to Dick & Mickey / Fleischer / from / Guy Endore." From the playwright's "Production Note": "The objective of this play (as stated in the text) is not merely [!] to compress into one evening the totality of Shakespeare, but like the Brecht Lehrstuecke and the WPA Living Theatre, to entertain as well." Furthermore, it was written and designed for performance "with little or no scenery, and any hall for a stage. Even your livingroom will do. Just so long as the majestic language of Shakespeare fills it. [This] should not be taken to mean that professional production values are excluded, or undesirable. No. It means only that the play is designed, accordion-like, to meet whatever proportions are desired or available, without loss of essential values." (He describes it elsewhere as "a lecture that has been exploded into theatrical material." Shakespeare himself, it might be noted, is not a character in the play, although Oscar Wilde and Mark Twain make appearances. Endore (1901-1970), a successful screenwriter and novelist, was also a political activist and pamphleteer who became involved in many left-wing and anti-racist causes (notably the "Sleepy Lagoon" case in Los Angeles in 1940); a member of the Communist Party, he somehow managed to avoid being hauled up before HUAC in the 1950s -- although he was blacklisted nonetheless. Zero Mostel (another blacklistee) is quoted in a 1966 newspaper article about his plans to form a repertory theatre company, with Endore's play (also mentioned occasionally in the press under the title "The Man Who Was Shakespeare") among its proposed productions; however, I've been unable to uncover any evidence that the play was ever professionally staged. This was likely the play's only publication; there are plenty of copies recorded in OCLC, but none (as of this writing) in the online marketplace. (The inscribees of this copy were the noted film director Richard Fleischer and his wife.). …

Store description

Welcome to ReadInk (rhymes with "Dead Ink"), now in our 29th year of putting interesting books into the hands of interested people. **** Although I occasionally lapse into the "royal we" voice, ReadInk is just me, from one end of the pipeline to the other: buying, cataloging, customer service, shipping, you name it. Nothing here is automated, and every order or inquiry gets my prompt, personal attention. **** In describing a book's physical condition, I employ standard book-grading terminology (Good/Very Good/Fine, with various in-between gradations as appropriate) and do my best to avoid both excessive jargon and overly-finicky detail. My goal is always to present a faithful impression of a book's condition and appearance; significant flaws are individually noted, or if too numerous are succinctly summarized. **** Books are more than just physical objects, however: they are also intellectual/information vessels, and in almost every case I also include some information about a book's content in my listing, even if it's only a carefully chosen quotation from the dust jacket copy. (This may sound like a small thing, but take a look sometime and you'll see how amazingly few sellers bother with this, especially in the case of older fiction, which is one of my specialties.) **** I take great care (and pride) in my packaging of books for shipment; I figure it's my responsibility to ensure that each book I send out will withstand the rigors of the U.S. Postal System, and will reach its new owner in the same condition as advertised. (A sturdy box or an unbendable package is always involved.) **** That's all there is to ReadInk: just a guy who has loved books all my life (perhaps to excess) and entered the trade in my "middle years" to see what I could make of it. And I'm still finding out. **** To view my inventory exclusively, head over to my website -- www.readinkbooks.com. ---- Howard Prouty, prop.…
