First (only) edition. Stiff wrappers. 12mo. Very good. Text and illustrations in intense Arts and Crafts style. Border of title page hand- or stencil-colored in ochre, text partly printed in blue. Dedicated to Elizabeth of Wied, the Queen of Romania, who used the name Carmen Sylva (i.e., Songs of the Woods). Frances Fearn acted as her agent in connection with the Queen's charitable work for the blind. Tipped onto the front blank is Carmen Sylva's ex libris, showing a woman standing in a glade of tall trees. The ex libris is signed in ink on its lower border both as Sylvae Carmen and Waldgesang. On the recto of the rear blank a photograph, probably of Frances Fearn, is mounted with the handwritten caption "The Queen's Messenger." Possibly unique thus. The proprietor of the Alderbrink Press was the artist and author Ralph Fletcher Seymour.
