About this Item
5 vols in 1, blue cloth, skiver spine=label, 8vo, 363 pp in all, plates. 1665 items. From the Introductory Note: " 'The scope and depth of this superb collection cannot be over-emphasized. strong in nearly every area of California interest. From the earliest European voyages of exploration to the emergence of the Golden State as an integral component of the modem American political and economic system, virtually every subject of importance is covered. We have organized the items in Catalogue 50 as follows: Part I consists of items published before California became a state (September 9, 1850); Parts II and III consist of items published after that date. A few items which are later editions of books published before 1850 have been included in Part I; we have dealt similarly with printed editions of manuscripts from the Mexican and American Territorial periods. Within these two chronological divisions, we have generally arranged items alphabetically by author, or in the case of anonymous works, by title. We have departed from this arrangement only when the item fell within a subject area that would be more meaningful to the collector than the name of the author or the title. Hence you will notice that the following subject entries occur within the alphaberical listing: Chinese Question, Directories, Early Imprints, Gold Rush, Land Claim, Legislature, Mexican War, Mining, Missions, Pious Fund, Railroads, San Francisco, Vigilance Committee, and Zamorano Imprint. Each item has been fully referenced with relation to the standard Californiana, Americana, and Mexicana bibliographies." Signed by Warren R, Howell, President of John Howell Books. Very Good.
