Item description from seller

Presumed first edition (no direct edition statement provided) INSCRIBED AND SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR. Ex-library copy. First edition (not stated). Paged as [8], 13-257 (matches LoC catalog pagination). Hardcover: H 22.5cm x L 14.25cm. Re-backed with brown cloth spine (approx. mid-20th century repair); original patterned cloth boards with some fading and light bumping/wear at edges. Strong foxing/toning to endpapers. Compiler/author's two-line ink inscription "To Prof. J.D.B. De Bow, | from the author" upon the front free endpaper. Rice Institute Library perforated stamp along with "Withdrawn | Rice University" ink stamp at title page's top right; t.p. also has pencil note at gutter margin and at bottom center; library pocket affixed to rear flyleaf; interior foxing. Binding is firm. Interesting association to J.D.B. De Bow, the outspoken pro-slavery and pro-secessionist publisher of "De Bow's Review" and "Industrial Resources of the Southern and Western States." Although a native of South Carolina, De Bow resided in New Orleans and, in his role as the editor of a prominent literary review, would have been interested in the relative young university's holdings (although chartered in 1820 the University of Alabama only opened to students in 1831). University librarian and faculty member (a tutor in ancient languages), Wilson Richardson notes in his Preface that the U of A library held 4,231 volumes.
