WILLIAM ALEXANDER PERCY'S COPY. First edition (not stated but per matching dates upon title and copyright pages) INSCRIBED, DATED, AND SIGNED BY THE ILLUSTRATOR. Paged as [half-title/color frontis], [title/copyright], [dedication], [contents], xi-xii, [2], [29 color plates], 1-97. Hardcover: H 29.75cm x L 22cm. No slipcase (i.e. lacking). No dust jacket (as issued?). Beige cloth soiled; slight scuffing to spine ends and board corners. Reddish-brown top edge with several stains; toning to bottom edge and fore-edge with leaves lightly affected at margins; staining and shallow abrasions at upper portion of fore-edge as well. Personal bookplate of William Alexander Percy affixed upon front pastedown; artist's three-line ink inscription "To Will, of the Mississippi Delta | From Huger, of the Carolina Low Country | Christmas 1936" in a casual script at the top of the front free endpaper; artist's ink signature "Alice R. Huger Smith" in a more formal cursive upon the dedication page. Binding is firm. Greenville, Mississippi native William Alexander Percy (1885-1942) was a Harvard-educated attorney and renowned poet who remains best known for his 1941 autobiography "Lanterns on the Levee."
