The engraved bookplate of Oliver Wendell Holmes's son with a nautilus shell and motto, "Per Ampliora Ad Altiora" indicating that the book was from his father's library, at the front of the volume. The work includes wonderful detail on what to expect when traveling in Russia: ". no one is allowed to cross the frontier without proper authority . it may be more difficult to get out of the country than to get in (p228).
