About this Item
States "First Edition 2008." Datelined "Las Vegas May 14 2008," inscribed "To Mary" and signed to the preliminary page bearing the author's photo (photographed when he was age 19) "Ian Wright." This book was signed to, and belonged to, Mary Wilson of the Supremes (1944-2021) -- we had it from her hand at her home in Henderson, Nevada (a suburb of Las Vegas) on Sept. 16, 2012. Looking through his old press clippings at their retirement home in Mont St. Michelle in 2004, hoping to put together a scrapbook for his son, photographer Wright (formerly of The Times and the BBC) and his wife Lauren found many of them "faded and crumbling beyond repair." Without much hope, they contacted the first newspaper where Wright had been promoted from darkroom boy to staff photographer in the early 1960s, the Northern Echo, to see if the newspaper preserved his negatives. "It's good that you phoned," said Chief Photographer Mike Gibb. "There are tons of old negatives and photographic equipment in a storeroom. Could you possibly come and help us edit the stuff before it all gets thrown out? . . . Nobody but you can read your handwriting on the envelopes." Here are the cream of those photos, of the young "pop star" hopefuls of 1963-1967 as they passed through the town of Darlington, County Durham, North Yorkshire, on tour, before "making it big": The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Animals, Roy Orbison, Cliff Richard, Gerry and the Pacemakers, The Dave Clark Five, The Swinging Blue Jeans, The Kinks, Manfred Mann, Wayne Fontana, The Searchers, Billy Jay Kramer and the Dakotas, The Moody Blues, The Yardbirds, Marianne Faithful, Tom Jones, Gerry Dorsey (a k a Englebert Humperdinck), Lulu, Gene Pitney, Dusty Springfield, Ike and Tina Turner, Jimi Hendrix, even Jayne Mansfield . . . along with a few less familiar faces, those who never made the Big Time. 147 pp., here reduced from $787.
