This book is a concise set of actions and mechanical means to determine if a fictional character in a story could actually perform the challenges they are attempting. Without the systems the characters would have no restrictions to what they could achieve, and you would have fanciful adventures as gods playing with the universe. With the restrictions the characters become mortal, always able to fail, sometimes able to pass even though the odds were against them. This is roleplaying. Players get control over a defined and sculpted individualised character, with a choice of limited skills and endless potential. As well as these 3 to 5 players with their characters, another player takes the role of the Story Guide. They are the arbitrators, editors in chief, final say on any decisions as a journey is invented by all at the game table. Scenarios and scenes are dreamt up. Challenges placed in the way by the story guide to test the characters abilities, hoping to pass, with failure forcing creative alternatives. This is normally where most of the fun is to be had. Stories are given a path with an over arching Big Bad event looming in the characters future. Every character also has their own internal motivation with individualised Life Quests. These two systems give players and the Story Guide endless avenues to explore in the story. Advice and guides are given on how a whole epic story, usually played in weekly 2 hour sessions for months, totally 10 chapters and 60-100 hours play if you get to go the whole journey. By this stage all the characters are well known, grown, completely fleshed out, with actual histories from all the past chapters adventure, and now the abilities to defeat the Big Bad are fully developed and ready. Bring on the final show-down, the culminating epic event to close the legendary tale. Well, the Story Guide can hope, but the players are usually having too good a time being annoying and funny to hold the honour of the party that high, but the job always gets an end, and hopefully lots of smiles, laughter and classic memories from your time on Orth, home of Blood, Pulp, and Spears.…
