Add to basket"A Biblio-Bio-Anecdotal Memoir of Frederic Dannay" is a memoir of one of the most influential figures in the history of American mystery literature, and mystery literature, in general, told by one of his successors, the author Eleanor Regis Sullivin. This first edition was limited to 150 copies, each signed by the author. Frederic Dannay (1905-1982) was one of the key figures in the history of American myster and thriller literature. Along with his cousin Manfred Bennington Lee (1905-1971), created the figure of Ellery Queen, a pseudonym under which they published numerous mysteries and thrillers, as well as being the name of the protagonist of many of their works. Dannay also created Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine which began to be published in 1941 and continues to circulate today. Dannay served as the editor for the magazine until his death in 1981. In 1961 other others began publishing under the name of Ellery Queen, though none of their works had Queen as the protagonist. The figure of Ellery Queen, both as character and author, was hugely influential for this genre in America and the rest of the world. In the 1940s Queen was one of the best-selling mystery authors in America. Eleanor Sullivan was well-placed to write this memoir of Dannay. She herself wrote mysteries and thrillers, as well as producing numerous anthologies of stories of mystery and suspense. She was editor-in-chief of Alfred Hitchcock's Mystery Magazine from 1975-1981, and was managing editor of Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine itself from 1970-1982. In 1987 she was awarded the Ellery Queen Award for Excellence by the Mystery Writers of America. John Groth (1908-1988), the illustrator of the portrait of Dannay on the front piece. He was best known for his ability to sketch quickly, and was particularly known for his work as an illustrator of conflict zones. He was the first art director for Esquire Magazine. This copy is signed both by Sullivan on the back page and by Groth on the front piece sketch of Dannay. Someone, likely the author, has signed "Ellery Queen" on the title page as well. This copy is in Near Fine condition. There is a very small tear to the paper covering the boards on the bottom edge of the front corner. The dust jacket is present, but in poor condition, with many tears.
