About this Item
Hardbacks, two volume set. 1st English Editions, London, 1863, Smith, Elder and Co. Important and unusual autobiographical account of an Englishman, Lieutenant of Artillery on the Field Staff (Southern Army) with a very detailed account of his experiences through many of the key American Civil War battles, ie Bull Run, Leesburg, Millsprings, Shenandoah Valley, Willamsburg, Vhickahominy, Cross Keys, Richmond, Manassas, Antietam, etc. The author's comments are often controversial but are very interesting in that they reflect the attitudes of the time from the southern point of view. Volume 1 339pp., folding plans, Volume II, 399pp., folding plans. Both volumes in original maroon cloth, gilt, some modest uneven fading and a few blemishes, else remarkably well preserved. Particularly significant is a signed presentation inscription at the top of the title page in both volumes to a Mrs M. Lockhart "With the very best wishes of her humble Lieut the author Thos E. Caffrey" (Note the signature is not entirely clear.) Possibly unique signed example of the two volume London Edition providing a source reference on the Southern experience of war. Ships from UK.
