Barbara Probsts series Exposures (20002006) dissects the relationship between the photographic moment and perceived reality by showing a single action from numerous points of view. Probst arranges for numerous photographers to take pictures of the same subject from varying angles (and distances) at precisely the same moment. The cameras vary in format and are loaded with different films, adding to the diversity of the resulting images. In one grouping, a vibrant photograph of a woman in a crosswalk shows the same moment as a grainy black and white image of the same woman, seen from above, through a window. The multiple exposures are more than a meditation on the event being recorded the images examine the act of reading photographs as documents of the actions or people they depict. While one may suggest voyeuristic qualities, another incorporates the slipshod framing of a snapshot, and another image may more closely resemble a runway shot of a model on the move. In this way Probsts sequences point out that the different ways we direct a photograph, by the position, settings, and film of the camera, can produce images with entirely disparate spheres of meaning.

Shipping Terms

All domestic orders ship within 2 business days. Shipping costs are based on books weighing 2.2 LBs, or 1 KG. If your order is heavy or oversized, I may contact you to let you know that extra shipping will be required, particularly if you request priority shipping. I ship through the U.S. Post Office. For domestic orders, I typically purchase insurance for books valued $100 and over.

For most international orders, I use USPS priority international or first class international mail. In order to qualify for the advertised rates, a book must fit into a standard size priority envelope which is about 9" x 12" or 23cm x 30cm--the thicker the book, the less likely to fit. If the book will not fit inside the international priority envelope, it will have to be shipped via first class international or priority which is typically more expensive. Shipping time for international orders is usually 6-10 days, not including custom delays.

All books are shipped in cardboard boxes with bubble wrap inside. As mentioned above, domestic priority and priority international shipments may require the book to be shipped in a USPS priority envelope which is less sturdy than a cardboard box. Customers ordering priority or priority international are welcome to contact me prior to ordering the book in order to inquire about the possibility or added costs of shipping in a cardboard box rather than the USPS flat rate envelope.
