Though known as a poet, this is a play by Irish Nobel laureate Seamus Heaney, based on the fifth century BC tragedy Antigone by Sophocles. The play contains many digressions from the Greek original, Heaney adding Irish idiom and expanding the involvement of some characters such as the Guard. It was first produced at the Abbey Theatre in Dublin in 2004 but was later adapted into an opera featuring much by Dominique Le Gendre. This premiered at London's Globe Theatre in 2008.
