The British Sniper, A Century of Evolution follows the weapons and associated equipment of the British Sniper from 1915 to the present, illustrating a century of British military sniping hardware with the help of 780 photographs which illuminate the back story of how the equipment came to be. All of the principal sniper rifles issued to the field army since 1915 are detailed in full colour, several of which are amongst the world's rarest, as well as the associated equipment, much of which is as scarce as the weapons themselves but is featured here in great detail. Each weapon appears chronologically with its service telescope and is brought to life by exclusive accounts from the snipers who used them in Britain's wars and skirmishes of the last century. This study of both rifles and scope includes the all-important mounts that bring the two together, but the story of the British sniper is much bigger than the rifle and telescope with which he did his deadly work: we follow the spotter's optics which started as a signaller's three draw telescope in 1915 as well as the development of the British sniper's garments which began as a painted trench coat and have evolved through the trial and error of generations of garments. Some of these that still aid the sniper routinely are basic and utilitarian and then there are the garments which are cutting edge and technology-led, designed to defeat a plethora of electronic obserbation devices. As we travel through the 20th century battery powered technology filters its way down to the individual operator that is the sniper, introducting him to his first technological device, night vision, which widened his role considerably. The success of night operations only added momentum to the development of night vision devices which could be adapted to the sniping role, enabling the sniper to see clearer and shoot further in the dark hours. It goes without saying that all are featured in this fully comprehensive and detailed study, delivering us at the door of the 21st century thrermal imagery. This work also opens the tool chest and lays bare the weapons and equipment of the last one hundred years which have made the British sniper revered and feared in equal measure. They are all here all in one place, making The British Sniper, A Century of Evolution the most curren resource for the collector and sniping history enthusiast alike. The detailed information as well as the colour pictorial record will serve as a reliable reference centre for identifying and authenticating the highly collectable weapons and equipment used by this exceptionally skilled infantryman who has for so many years possessed an enviable reputation within the global sniping community. An outstanding publication. Very Scarce. Both the Book and the Dust Jacket are in Fine condition showing only light use. An opportunity to own a beautiful copy of a hard-to-fine book at a reasonable price.
