SIGNED BY MAUDE ABBOTT: "Dr. Ina Richter/ with the regards of the writer/ Maude E. Abbott/ Santa Barbara Nov. 30th, 1936." Ina May Richter received her M.D. degree from Johns Hopkins in 1918. This copy of Abbott's Atlas was presented to Ina May Richter during a 7-week-long lecture tour by Abbott in 1936. The tour is the subject of chapter XV ("Western Tour", pp. 189-196) in H. E. MacDermot's biography of Maude Abbott (published in 1941). Garrison-Morton 2865. In the Foreword to Maude Abbott's Atlas of Congenital Cardiac Disease, Paul Dudley White wrote: "It was left to Maude Abbott, fired by a spark from Osler, to make the subject one of such general and widespread interest that we no longer regard it with either disdain or awe as a mystery for the autopsy table alone to discover and to solve. She has been the most important of the pioneers in establishing congenital heart disease as a living part of clinical medicine." "Abbott, refused admission to the medical school of McGill University in Montreal, received her medical degree from Bishop's College. Abbott eventually was appointed to the McGill medical faculty and was later appointed curator of the McGill Medical Historical Museum. A skilled physician and pathologist, she utilized her broad clinical experience and exposure to the wide range of specimens at the museum to prepare this book on cardiac anomalies.
