An anthology of first-person accounts from international humanitarian workers serving in regions marked by war, genocide, famine, and natural disaster, including Sudan, Rwanda, Bosnia, Somalia, Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Afghanistan. Contributors recount field experiences in their own words, documenting the moral complexity, danger, and personal cost of relief work. The volume includes a foreword by John le Carré (David Cornwell) and is organized by thematic sections such as Natural Disasters and War. Published by Orbis Books, the Maryknoll-based press known for works addressing global justice, faith, and social responsibility. Association/Inscription: Warmly inscribed on the front free endpaper: 'For Elizabeth & Michael- True humanitarians- With love, respect, Ngan T. Nguyen,' dated NYC, '08. Nguyen is the author of the chapter 'Grandmother' (Vietnam). This represents a contributor inscription rather than a generic gift inscription and adds modest association value. Condition: Near Fine in Very Good dust jacket. Cream boards clean and square with sharp corners; binding tight; interior bright and unmarked aside from the inscription. Jacket shows light edgewear with minor creasing at spine head and upper corners; original price present; no clipping. No remainder marks observed.
