Add to basketSigned First Edition, First Printing of this critique of American Cold War readiness by one of the most significant and controversial American military leaders of the World War II and early Cold War eras, Air Force General Curtis LeMay. During World War II, LeMay emerged as an innovative and aggressive strategic bombing theorist and commander. Placed in charge of air operations in the vicinity of Japan, he conceived and executed the lethal bombing campaign that included the massive firebombing of Tokyo. Postwar, he spent a decade as the leader of the Strategic Air Command followed a four-year stint as Air Force Chief of Staff. LeMay tended to excel at organization, battle theory, and force readiness, but drew criticism for blunt and aggressive policy recommendations that leaned toward confrontation with the Soviets and included a less than skittish attitude toward the use of nuclear weapons. His expressed sentiments towards nukes proved unhelpful in one of his highest profile post Air Forces ventures -- candidate for Vice President of the United States in 1968 as the running mate of third party candidate George Wallace. Signed by Curtis LeMay on a tipped-in page at front. 349 pages, cloth. The book itself shows no sign of previous use. The dust jacket has a crease on the front flap of the dust jacket and a bit of edge wear.
